Apple Picking in Vermont…A Fall Tradition
Fall in New England is a sensory delight for both locals and the many travelers who flock here to witness the brilliant hues of autumn. It's a season we never grow tired of, full of activities that bring people together, and one of the most beloved traditions is apple picking.
With over 40 orchards scattered throughout the state, visitors don't just pick apples—they immerse themselves in the atmosphere of each unique farm. Every orchard carries its own charm, and it's always a joy to discover what makes each one special.
For me, Indigenous People’s Day weekend in early October has become a cherished tradition. We head south, beginning in the Champlain Islands and winding our way to East Dorset—a scenic drive that feels plucked from a postcard. Beyond the beauty of the landscape, this trip holds deeper meaning as it also brings us closer to family.
Mad Tom’s Orchard in East Dorset is owned by my partner Greg’s Uncle Tom and Aunt Sylvie. It's a multi-generational affair, with Tom’s parents having worked the land before him, and now their daughter, Jen, alongside her husband Hank, is stepping up to carry on the family legacy. This year, we were greeted by even more relatives—another uncle, his wife, and all the grandchildren—making it a true family reunion. Watching them all in the barn, chatting with customers and offering guidance, made the experience even more memorable.
Families arrived with a sense of excitement, grabbing wagons and studying the hand-painted map before heading out into the orchard. From babies in strollers to grandparents reminiscing about past visits, apple picking at Mad Tom’s is a tradition filled with laughter, memory-making, and snapshots that will be treasured for years to come.
If you find yourself driving through Vermont’s rolling hills, admiring the fall foliage, I highly recommend stopping at any of the local orchards you pass. Take a moment to meet the owners, stroll through their trees, and soak in the experience—you won’t regret it. And if you happen to find yourself at Mad Tom’s Orchard, be sure to say hello to Tom, Sylvie, Jen, and Hank. On weekends, don’t miss the cider donuts! And if you do stop by, tell them Cari sent you 😊.
